These principles guide our community and create the unique culture of Čarodění. Understanding and embracing them is essential for every participant.
Anyone may be a part of Burning Man. We welcome and respect the stranger. No prerequisites exist for participation in our community. We believe that transformative change, whether in the individual or in society, can occur only through the medium of deeply personal participation.
Burning Man is devoted to acts of gift giving. The value of a gift is unconditional. Gifting does not contemplate a return or an exchange for something of equal value. Gifts can be as simple as a smile, a helping hand, or a moment of connection.
In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, our community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. We stand ready to protect our culture from such exploitation. At Čarodění, the only things for sale are ice and coffee.
Burning Man encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on their inner resources. You must bring everything you need: food, water, shelter, and supplies for the entire event. There are no stores or services – come prepared to take care of yourself.
Radical self-expression arises from the unique gifts of the individual. No one other than the individual or a collaborating group can determine its content. It is offered as a gift to others. In this spirit, the giver should respect the rights and liberties of the recipient.
Our community values creative cooperation and collaboration. We strive to produce, promote and protect social networks, public spaces, works of art, and methods of communication that support such interaction. Building Čarodění is a collective endeavor.
We value civil society. Community members who organize events should assume responsibility for public welfare and endeavor to communicate civic responsibilities to participants. We also assume responsibility for conducting events in accordance with local, state and federal laws.
Our community respects the environment. We are committed to leaving no physical trace of our activities wherever we gather. We clean up after ourselves and endeavor, whenever possible, to leave such places in a better state than when we found them. MOOP (Matter Out Of Place) is the enemy!
Our community is committed to a radically participatory ethic. We believe that transformative change can occur only through deeply personal participation. We achieve being through doing. Everyone is invited to work. Everyone is invited to play. There are no spectators.
Immediate experience is, in many ways, the most important touchstone of value in our culture. We seek to overcome barriers that stand between us and a recognition of our inner selves, the reality of those around us, participation in society, and contact with a natural world exceeding human powers.
Here's how these principles translate into practical guidelines for our event.
Bring all your food, water, shelter, and supplies. There are no shops or restaurants on site. Plan for 5 days of complete self-sufficiency.
The only commerce allowed is ice and coffee. Everything else operates on gifting – share freely without expecting anything in return.
Everything you bring in, you take out. No trash cans are provided. Separate your recyclables and be prepared to carry your waste home.
Don't be a spectator! Create, help, engage, share. Whether it's art, music, workshops, or simply conversations – be an active participant.
Treat every person you meet as a friend you haven't made yet. Our community thrives on radical inclusion and mutual respect.
This is a judgment-free zone. Wear what you want, be who you are, and share your unique gifts with the community.
"The Ten Principles are not rules; they are values that we share as a community. They guide us toward creating a temporary city where everyone can experience belonging, creativity, and transformation."
